Observation details
Small grayish empid with brownish/olive wash and bright wing bars, complete eyering slightly pointed in back, very short primary projection, bill short and dark underneath at the tip but pale at base especially when viewed from below, tail repeatedly flicked upwards. Struck me visually as very small and short-winged, visually either Dusky or Least. First seen flycatching from low perches in scrub at southwest end of north beach pond, but seemed to be spending more time in the trees around the pond. Studied at length from ~30 feet, puzzled over it for a while, then it sang! Sharp “che-bek”, first part higher pitched. Also gave soft “whit” calls, softer but otherwise similar to DUFL calls I heard a lot this spring, and a few burry "prrr" calls. Found at 06:10, still there at 07:45, seen and heard by others later in the day. Photos and recordings.
