Observation details
There was a lot of discussion between me and other birders whether this was a 1st year red-shouldered or a 1st year broad-winged hawk. My first impression was a broad-winged. Here is an explanation from Shane Brown as to why the broad-wing identification. "The secondaries are plain and particularly dark, too dark for Red-shouldered. The thin, clean-edged central throat stripe favors Broad-winged over Red-shouldered, which has a thicker often blurred throat marking. The blobbiest ventral markings are at the lower throat corners.
