Observation details
Well known location for this species in winter, the trick being to watch for birds flushing from the marsh on the rising high tide. This one flushed from the saltmarsh in the bay and flew for cover in brush along the bay shoreline on the Inverness side. We had excellent views of it in flight for several seconds - an amazing experience. From my field notes: "1 seen briefly but very well in flight & briefly as it alighted on the water before swimming out of sight into the brush. Tiny. Short, rounded black wings. Neat white speculum. Legs long and dangling. Bright ochre yellow overall when on the water. Viewed @ 40 m w. Leica 10 x 50 BA. Bright sunlight."
