Media notes
Behavior and other notes: Adult male Eastern Whip-poor-will singing from the road. At 0:52 he changes to growl-cluck calls as a second bird arrives and starts to give quiet, throaty calls that are slightly higher-pitched than the growl-cluck calls. I have never heard this call type from this species before. Recording Time: 0504 (UTC -4). Temperature 13C. Habitat: mixed deciduous woods. Distance to sound source: 15 meters. Specific location: Sleepy Creek WMA, high hairpin, Berkeley Co., WV. Latitude 39.511825, Longitude -78.138204. Elevation 488 meters. ID’d by sight and sound; ID confidence 100%. Equipment notes: Recorder HPF on at 80Hz, -12dB/octave.
Observation details
There were a minimum of four singing males here. There was also a minimum of two females here with one of the singing males. The male in these recordings was within 30 meters of the hairpin turn. Another male was higher up on Third Hill Mtn. Two males were singing to the east, down hill from my position. After many years of severely declining numbers of Whip-poor-wills at Sleepy Creek WMA, it now appears that the species is rebounding. Let's hope that this positive trend continues well into the future.
