Observation details
Heard only, just beyond the powerlines on the west side of the road. Not grunting calls. Slow check notes. Made two recordings that were somewhat poor due to the bird’s volume and ambient wind, but the call notes are audible. Sounded very similar to iBird and similar to clapper rails back east. On rare occasions, I’ve heard Virginia rails back east do single notes (rather than “kitik”), but usually not so consistently, and the tone seemed a bit off for that as well. Habitat seemed appropriate (marshes with salt water or next to salt water). In the 23 second recording the first ten seconds are best; in the 37 second recording, notes are most prominent from about seconds 17-35. Apologies for the wind.
