Observation details
Flushed three of these today out of the tall grass along the edge of the lake near the big field. Slightly smaller than a dove. Flies very, very fast and low with quick, about 6' side-to-side zigzag flight. It's almost impossible to get a good look at these birds. They are have very dark wings and body, but the black and white pattern on the back was occasionally noticeable when they were not back lit. Often flew just 150 ' away and landed back in the marsh. I had to flush them a few times each to finally see the markings and bill. They fly so fast that the bill is hard to even see, but I got a lucky picture which shows the bill. This picture is highly cropped.
