Observation details
Spencer Hardy pointed out this might be a Caspian Tern. That fits: it lacks a black tip to the beak, has dark under the primaries, and a short tail that, if wedged at all, is very slight. However, the other major differentiator is that this bird was very large for a tern. I had expected Common Terns and didn't think of Caspian at the time as I am largely unfamiliar with them.
