Observation details
Came upon the bird on the way to a restaurant late evening. It was roaming alone by the side of a busy lane. Didn't seem to be injured. A couple of guys helped me capture it and I carried it home in my hands since I didn't have anything handy. I took it home because it would have surely be run over by vehicle or ended up as a prey to stray dogs or cats. I sent pictures to birding friends. I was informed that it was a Yellow-legged Buttonquail by Ramesh Shenai. I wasn't sure about what habitat should I release it in. Kept water in a bowl and put out some cooked rice and kank seeds(bird feed available in the market). It seemed to feed on kank. It settled well at home and roamed about freely. I didn't want to confine it in basket or cage as it might affect its movements in the wild once released. It took short flights in the house, only when startled. Otherwise didn't seem to be brothered by our presence. It was shitting too, though can't say if it was normal shit or not, since I have no clue. But that was an indication it was feeding okay. Omkar Kinjavdekar, who is a vet, visited on 19th and checked the bird for injuries. He said it was fine. On 20th October morning, along with Mugdha Ramani, Varun Satose, Amol Lopes and a few others released it at Bhuigaon, Vasai. Carried it in cat basket covered with bedsheet during train and bus travel. I had put some seeds for it in the basket. Upon release, it fed for a few seconds on drops of water collected on grass blades and finally took a nice long flight into nearby bushes.
