Observation details
***Mega!! Absolutely insane bird- total CMF! Found by Matt Janson, who first flushed it and then very graciously waited for everyone to arrive. After about 10 minutes of tromping through the sedges and grass, it flushed from an area of shorter grass where it flew to next to the small group of trees. Habitat was surprisingly good for a YERA- lots of standing water with dense clumps of juncus, sedges, forbs, and other grasses. A brief, maybe 5-10 second view as it flew up, out, and down. Small, about fist-sized, dark bird with gleaming white secondaries that basically glowed. Poor photos (5 star by Yellow Rail standards) show the intricate white banding on the back, golden coloration of the bird, short bill, and bright white secondaries. Unfortunately not able to refind later- probably hunkered down as we all walked in lines to flush it (while socially distancing, of course).
