Observation details
A male had been reported here by Denny Granstrand and others, with a large flock of scaup (100 Lessers, 200 Greaters) about a mile south of Wanapum SP. I observed it through my Swarovski scope at 20-40x at 0800 in strong sunlight, coming from behind me. The long skinny Tuft hung down almost to its back. The back appeared solid, unbarred black. Head and neck were smaller and rounder than either species of scaup, with a slenderer bill that had a whitish band between the dark tip and the grayish beak.
