Observation details
Paul McKenzie called and said the continuing bittern was calling loudly and showing well. I followed his instructions to get there (described in checklist comments), and Paul had the bird staked out when I arrived . . . in time to watch it fly away through the rain. However, it landed further south in the marsh, although much further from the trail, and we were able to relocate the bittern. Awesome to hear and watch; in the photos, you can actually see the bird calling—it inflates its throat and then expels the sound. Each sequence lasted for about five seconds and came at an interval of roughly three minutes.
