Media notes
Dawn songs by an unseen bird that began about 20-25 meters away and 15 meters up in the top of the same relatively small tree where it began the previous afternoon in rather scrubby forest with scattered taller trees along the old logging road 3.5 kilometers beyond the bridge over the Río Grande. [8° 06’ 43.0” N, 61° 39‘ 50.0” W, 283 meters]. This bird began with the long-call recorded in cut #BOL 129 and then the first song at 5:39:08, after which I missed two songs before getting onto the bird at 5:40:08. I began recording again after I missed one song getting back onto the bird, which moved only a short distance to the west along the road, so it was 30 meters away and 20 meters up at the beginning of the second part of the recording. It moved a short distance further down the road at 5:48:04, after which it was about 20-30 meters away and 25 meters up in a large tree along the road (though I still had a difficult time getting a clear shot at it). The bird sang again at 6:05, this time moving further to the west and back south of the road, now 50-70 meters away and apparently 15-20 meters up in a relatively large (20-25 meter-tall), densely vegetated tree well back from the road, but it again moved near the end of the recording, after which it was probably 70-80 meters away. It returned to the slightly closer tree just before the end of the second part of the recording. Short-calls by a second individual are heard in the background late in the second part of this recording. I began recording the third part at 6:31:14 after missing about 10 songs in the process of getting closer to the bird, which remained in about the same place for this entire part of the recording, about 30-50 meters away and 15-20 meters up in a dense, vine-covered tree about 60 meters into the forest on the south side of the road and at the west end of where this bird typically sang. At the conclusion of the third part of this recording the bird moved even further back from the road (seemingly about 150 meters away) where it continued to sing relatively consistently and where it gave a long-call at 7:13:06. This bird continued to sing consistently until we left the area at 8:33. however, it remained well to the south of the road this entire time, when it was probably no closer than 100 meters from me, so I was essentially unable to record it. Low overcast but with a few patches of blue sky early on but a full, relatively dense overcast at the end of the third part of the recording, and some light mist at times. Calm. initially in the mid-70s but 79° F at the conclusion of the third part of the recording. ML: Subject identified by recordist as Xiphorhynchus guttatus polystictus but assigned to Xiphorhynchus guttatus [guttatus Group] to conform to eBird Taxonomy (v. 2016). -[Brad Walker 18Aug2016]. This individual was recorded multiple times and can be found in the following ML records: 222389, 222393, 222704. Equipment Notes: Sennheiser powered using phantom power and with filter in flat position and attenuator off for all recordings. Nagra input set at 2 mV / Pa and low-pass filter in flat position unless noted otherwise.
