Observation details
1st cycle, obsvd flying down Blakeley River, initially rel. close (300m?) and rel. low, then circling higher and continuing downriver. Approx. 2 min observation, in good light (looking east w/ sun behind me). Bold black M on upperwing striking, w/ outer primaries all black, inner primaries bright white, mantle gray; black collar on upperside of neck seen well. Significantly larger than nearby Forster's Terns, approx. size of nearby Ring-billed Gulls. From 1st cycle Bonaparte's Gull by size, bulkier build w/ less buoyant flight, larger bill, black collar, more bold black M contrasting w/ bright white inner primaries, and lack of black in trailing edge of (upper) wing. Sketch and field notes made at time of obs attached.
