Observation details
I noticed two things that separate this species from Short-billed Dowitcher: some individuals had outrageously long bills (females out of the overlap zone), and the presence of white lesser coverts on the underwing - I first became aware of this from a statement by Gary Nunn who described it something like "the white block is diagnostic". One of my photos, where the bird his holding its wings aloft, shows this white area on the underwing.
