Observation details
Swimming in the river close to the Vermont bank, among the large group of Canada Geese. No other ducks were around at all. The bird was about even with my vantage point at the boat ramp, giving me good, extended scope views in good light. I was not able to get great digi-scoped photos (thanks largely to wind shaking the scope), but I have included a couple passable photos below. An apparent male, although it looked a bit different from a classic adult male in basic plumage, appearing a little browner overall than I would have expected. Perhaps still molting into basic plumage, or else maybe a first-winter male? The bird was pretty stationary. When I first saw it, it was simply loafing in the water. It soon tucked its head under its wing and closed its eyes for a brief nap. When I left the bird, it had begun dabbling in the water right up against the bank. Here are two of my photos of the bird. The coloring of the second photo is a little bit off, making the bird's white secondaries appear yellowish. I did get a good view of the white secondaries and the rest of the wings when the bird stood up and flapped a few times.
