Observation details
Two birds are now present among the continuing shorebird congregation in a large puddle that has formed in the fields just north of the Westmoreland-Walpole town line. The two Semipalmated Sandpipers at one point were standing among a group of Least Sandpipers, giving excellent side-by-side comparisons. They were clearly larger and bulkier than the Leasts, but were not large enough to be White-rumpeds. Each bird had a sandy-brown back, lacking the richer chestnut tones of the Least Sandpiper. Each bird also looked lighter on the throat and the face than a Least Sandpiper would. I tried to get some digiscoped documentation photos, but none came out very well. This one at least shows the size difference between the Semipalmated on the left and the Least on the right.
