Observation details
Exact count with clicker as the birds migrate west along the shoreline, often in groups of 10-20. Was careful not to double-count as birds kicked back east while soaring on strong SW winds. Some birds appeared to head out over lake in attempt to make the 25-mile crossing to MN (open water, not ice), although some/many could be seen returning to take the safer shoreline route. This is my highest single-day total ever in WI, and at a somewhat surprising early date given fairly average winter weather with plenty of snow and ice (i.e. not an overly mild season).
