Observation details
I first saw this bird diving alone in the middle of the river, south of the boat ramp. I watched it for a while, then got out my camera to digiscope it. I looked in the scope one more time to make sure it was still there, and to my frustration it dove--and immediately was replaced by a pair of outstretched eagle talons! The eagle (the apparent third-year immature bird) made several unsuccessful attempts on the merganser's life before landing on a stationary piece of ice nearby. The merganser then swam over to join a group of Common Mergansers.
