Media notes
Migrant Grasshopper Sparrow at Cal State San Bernardino, 18 Nov 2015.
Observation details
I flushed this bird from the weedy patch of coastal sage scrub north of the College of Education building. Initially, it perched in the open a short distance from me on a dead stalk of vegetation, allowing excellent views. It then flew into the denser patch of coastal sage scrub and would provide only fleeting glimpses in flight. Later, I joined Michael Woodruff in searching for the bird. We flushed it several times before it eventually flew to the xeriscaped area outside the college of education. Here we got excellent views as the bird stood in the open below the large succulents, and for a while hunkered down in the corner away from any vegetation. This is the first migrant Grasshopper Sparrow I have encountered in San Bernardino County, although I have seen them several times on campus when there was a [potentially] breeding population present (the last time on 30-31 Mar 2010).
