Observation details
This diving duck was submerged in the Sandoval Co. lagoon when I arrived. I was checking the blind corner of the lagoon when it surfaced reasonably close to me and immediately spooked, flying one lap around the lagoons before heading off to the south towards the river. The separated white spots on the top of each of the secondaries is distinct to this species, with the females showing much less white than the males. Other species of mergansers would have solid white patches across the trailing end of the secondaries.
