Observation details
Mega rarity inland, seen at first light and had in view for several minutes during which I got great looks at it showing a small, dark loon with a rounded head, small straight held bill with a well defined black/white line down neck. A slight chin strap occasionally in view. Dark on upper 2/3 of face. Obviously smaller than Common Loons in area. No white on flanks at all ruling out Arctic Loon. Attempted several digiscoped shots but the light was just too low to allow my phone to pick up enough to get diagnostic shots. The bird flushed when some eagle moved through around 6:30. The bird was seen in flight and appeared much less bulky than a COLO...attempted video of bird in flight but too distant. The bird appeared to move off to the southeast after a couple circles around. The bird appeared once again, further out around 7:30 and although further out the light was better so I managed to get some better digiscoped shots. I once again had it in view for several minutes. The wind and rain made viewing difficult. I once again lost the bird from view and was not able to relocate again but it may have just moved out and was lost in the waves. Likely first county record and one of only a handful of western mass records with most in Berkshire County and typically in very late Oct-early Dec.
