Observation details
When I first got there it was floating seaward side of hurricane dike, then it awkwardly jumped into a crevice in the rocks at the base of the dike. Saw it again later from the cannons at the Fort, foraging a little then squeezing back into the rocks. Sent photo to various birders. M. Iliff suggested this "It looks like a Thick-billed Murre to me. I think you can see a bit of the pale along the gape line, but otherwise the shape of the bill, the fact that the head is all dark and rather dark blackish-brown (vs. more brownish) all point to Thick-billed over Common. That is also by far the more likely species in a scenario like this, and they are turning up all over the place now."
