Observation details
Continuing from earlier in the day. Represents only the fourth Glaucous record for Montco, and the first of those beyond first cycle. This was probably a third winter gull based on adult mantle color and bill markings. Mantle was pale gray, lighter colored than Herring or Ring-billed. Wingtips had no black/gray in them, either folded or when unfurled during a brief, pointless flight. Blocky head had only faint streaking. Bill had an indistinct dark ring around the tip. Judging size was tricky, with all the gulls seen on an uneven surface perspective mashed together in spotting scope, and initially had me suspicious about whether I might be looking at an Iceland, but eventually the gull was seen next to a Herring Gull at the same distance from me. The Glaucous was visibly a little bit larger. It was consistently larger than the Lesser Black-backs. Wingtips did not extend far beyond the tail tip. Digiscoped video:
