Observation details
Immature, deceased (measured 17" long, head to tail). Found dead on trail along NW shore of lake. The first photo is exactly how I found the bird on the trail. I carefully turned it over on its back and front to get photos. When I finished I respectfully put the bird off the side of the trail and covered it with some leaves, grass and sticks. This COHA was a recent kill as it was not decomposed (or eaten) and rigor mortis had not fully set in and it wasn't frozen either (temps had risen to mid30s when I found the bird). I was able to pretty easily extend the wings. Due to the proximity of the much smaller Merlin that was only about 50 feet from the COHA, I couldn't help but wonder if it was possible that the Merilin launched a surprise attack on the COHA and inflict a lucky fatal blow (I didn't examine the body thoroughly but there no wounds visible).
