Observation details
One immature bird first struck me (NWT) from a distance as too clean cut for slate-colored. Back to had some reddish tones that were cut off by a clean gray hood. Bit of reddish tones also on the crown. The hood was shaped more like a “bib” and didn't go deep enough as on a slate-colored junco. Orangey sides seemed very bright/ bold compared to a female slate-colored nearby. Not clean enough for Oregon, but definitely an interesting bird. Sent pics to Sean Williams and he agreed that this bird is hard to place past the species level. A couple good guesses include Oregon x Slate-colored or "cismontanus" (notably there is speculation that cismontanus may also just describe the hybrid taxon).
