Observation details
Seen actively swimming and diving for small fish in Sail Cove. Many times, they were only 20 feet offshore, allowing for great views through binoculars and a spotting scope. Smaller than nearby Common and Pacific Loons. Heads held at a slight upward tilt. Dark top and head, white cheeks and surrounding the eyes. Dark back with white speckles, and clean white chin, throat and underparts. Note: both birds had white on the flanks (curiously like an Arctic Loon), but one of the birds had more extensive white flanks. Photos to follow.
