Observation details
*First Island Record* Two males. Red head, yellow eye, blue bill with black tip, black chest feathers beginning to come in, dingy gray-brown back with a few black-and-white vermiculated feathers (when viewed through scope). White secondaries and buffy primaries visible in flight. In video of bird on water, black tips to primaries also visible. Photos. Sullivan and Kershner (2005), under hypothetical species, state, "The identification of a single bird reported 1–4 Jun 1981 is likely correct, but the lack of supporting details warrants listing the species as hypothetical. Jones and Collins (unpubl. data) know of only one acceptable record for the Channel Islands (from Thompson Reservoir, Santa Catalina Island, Garrett and Dunn 1981) plus three hypothetical reports." Collins and Jones (2015) consider Redhead a rare winter visitor to Santa Catalina Island.
