Observation details
Seen from ~ 20 meters in excellent light. After viewing my photos, I wish to amend my comments to include: Dark duck with small grayish/blackish bill. Has two white marks on its face: one is a roundish auricular patch; a second much larger loral patch extends from nearly the top front edge of the eye down to beneath the eye and then to the base of the bill (see first photo). I know it is difficult to differentiate between a juvenile and female in this species. After consulting a waterfowl identification guide by Madge and Burns (1988), I believe this to be a juvenile. According to the authors, the feather edges on the upper parts of the body are brownish in color as opposed to being gray in females (see second photo).
