Media notes
First winter surf scoter, shows dark cap and white on face. Bill larger, more bulbous than most duck species.
Observation details
Two immature/first winter surf scoters. Dark cap contrasts with white in face. Eye brown. Flanks paler gray and back and wings darker gray/black. Bill somewhat inflated near nares, gives more bulbous bill appearance than most duck species. Both birds were north of Goose Bay, seen from the point at the northwest edge of Goose Bay. They were not together, but foraging about 250 meters apart from each other. Photo of the closer bird, the second bird looked the same, but was too far away to get a reasonable photograph.
