Observation details
Photo lifer! I'd witnessed this bird on my first day birding ever, but certainly never identified it, I just took the word of the birder I was with. I've been looking to see one ever since. Plus it is great to get a photo of one. It was hopping in thick brush along side of path near homes. Had a much higher chirp call than a song sparrow. Almost in the same vocal range with bushtits. It didn't sing but responded defensively to Fox-Sooty song I played. I recorded this defensive call. I got some photos through the brush. Has corn yellow lower bill, reddish cast to face and no distinct supercilium. Reddish auriculars, and pyramid/chevron spots on chest instead of streaks.
