Observation details
Rare**** After driving out the fishing pier I noticed a small bird on the water that I suspected was a murrelet. I quickly got on it with my binoculars and confirmed my suspension and identified it as a Long-billed Murrelet. I took a few photos of the bird for conformation and started making phone calls. By the end of the day 200-300 people from all over the Northeast got to see this rare US and first state record. Many photos where taken and the bird was well documented. About fifteen years earlier I had seen my first one in upstate New York and later l saw few others in several locations. Since that first time l had told several people that I was going to find one at this location. I image they thought that I was crazy to even consider finding one let alone at this specific location. I just felt like this was the most likely place for me to find one in Pennsylvania. It took many visits over the years and a whole lot of luck. Patients, persistence and positivity usually pay off. I am still waiting on a couple rarities that I believe I will eventually find. Only time will tell if fate will bless me with good fortune with these other rarities.
