Media notes
Large teardrop-shaped spots indicates a juvenile. Large, flattish head and strong head projection as it flew away eliminates Sharp-shinned Hawk. Heaviness of streaking, extending all the way to the crissum, favors Goshawk over Cooper's Hawk. Streaking and light eye indicates a juvenile. Full resolution image.
Observation details
Large somewhat clumsy accipiter (as it took off). Heavy streaking on the breast, thin light and dark bands on the spread tail. Light colored eye and chest streaking indicates a juvenile. Brownish streaking and slightly buffy underneath consistent with juvenile Goshawk, but not definitive. Located in forested mountain habitat.
