Scan of drawing from my notebook.
Observation details
My notes read: At 11:30 near lifeguard station #50 I found a small black-and-white alcid floating and occasionally diving 50-100m off the beach. It had a stocky body with a short neck and a short, sharp bill. The bill and eye were black. The bird was largely black above and white below. The head was patterned with black: black extended back from the base of the bill, surrounded the eye, and then retreated up and back to the nape such that it had a slightly masked look. The white of the lower face did not make a full collar across the nape but was close. The bird flapped its wings several times revealing the upperwing: fully black save for a white line along the major axis on the tertials (I think, see drawing). There was pale dark vertical barring on the flanks. The undertail coverts were white.
