Observation details
PM originally mis-identified this bird as an odd immature DCCO but the photo was reviewed by Dr. J.V. Remsen, Jr., who identified it as a NECO. Based on the long tail, long neck, slim body profile, and small bill, we agree with Van's determination. PM did not consider this species as none had been reported in the St. Louis area and was more concentrated on experimenting with the shutter speed on his camera and casually photographed a cormorant that flew by. This bird flew from the flooded field at the end of Red School Rd. on top of the levee where there was a large flock of RBGU, AWPE and CATE and flew towards the dam at Riverlands. Brad was looking through his scope for the ongoing GBBG which we were unable to relocate. Because PM did not originally identify the cormorant as a NECO, he did not bring the cormorant to Brad's attention as there were other DCCOs flying around in the area.
