Observation details
A juvenile night heron. Field marks with respect to plumage included brownish coloration overall with tiny white spots on the tips of the feathers of the wing coverts; narrow white edging to the feathers of the greater coverts; buffy triangular spots on the wings, back, and neck; and relatively narrow, distinct buffy streaks on the neck, breast, and flanks. Structurally the bird had a short, thick, mostly black bill that was paler and more grayish near the base; a relatively long neck; long greenish-yellow legs; and a relatively large eye. The very similar juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron would show large white spots on the wing coverts and broad, blurry streaks on the neck, breast, and flanks. Black-crowned Night Heron would also have a slightly longer, thinner bill with extensive yellow on the lower mandible; a shorter, thicker neck; somewhat shorter legs; and a smaller eye.
