Observation details
A juvenile found 4 August by Steve Mierzykowski was still present when we arrived and foraged around the perimeter of the south pond, one time flying north and over to marsh to the east (but returning shortly). Medium-small heron/egret that was all white, only the tips of the outer primaries showing dusky (dark gray on tip of outer web and more extensively on tip of inner web, the central area at the tip on the ventral side white). The legs were dull olive-yellow becoming brown (stained) toward olive-yellow toes. The toes seemed very large. The tarsus showing ringed scales. The beak was sharply pointed and straight. The loral skin at the base of the maxilla was dull, pale yellow; ahead of that was a pale blue-green wash grading into the dull, pale pinkish bill base; the tip was dark (blackish). At one point the bird yawned, opening its mouth wide towards us. The mouth-lining was bright pinkish-red. The irides were whitish. The crown often showed a squared-off look with a slight short crest and the rear crown. The bird was rather stocky but still elegant and deliberate in its foraging manner.
