Observation details
Several birds were calling from tree tops and while flying over. But we came across 4 ground-feeding individuals that allowed us a close-up view from the car, and it was so fun to observe their unique feeding behavior. What they were eating could not be determined by us, (grit, minerals?) but they were digging in the dirt with their powerful bills, and turning heads sideways to 'lick' the surface with their tongues. Not sure what type crossbills these are, but the ones flying over and calling sounded like Type 2.
