Media notes
Scratchy/rough calls of adult, with less scratchy/rough response calls heard in the recording and observed visually from a fledgling emerging from reeds as it approached an adult. Towards the end of the recording, a ticking bill snap alarm can be heard, of the adult encouraging the fledgling to return into the reeds, after which the adult also retreated into the reeds. Our canoe was sitting about 35-40 feet away from the reeds, so able to see and record well. Calls of a significant number of Mallard ducklings and occasional adult Mallards can be heard constantly in the background (later observed through the reeds).
Observation details
Including two fledglings. Known breeding location for this species. Heard regularly among reeds/cattails over a widespread area, but generally unable to see them. Could have easily been double this number, but only counted those seen. Some of what were heard only could have also been Common Gallinules.
