Observation details
Lone bird seen on beach at Field 7 among a group of gulls with people all around. It was less skittish than the gulls and seemed comfortable and content to stand there and rest on the sand. It finally briefly took to air after a fast moving bicyclist rode by on the sidewalk just a few feet from the bird. I took several photos, which were overexposed due to wrong settings on camera, but a little editing back home made the photos much clearer allowing for an easy positive ID. I was standing only 15 to 20 feet from the bird when taking the photos, perhaps even closer. It was a fairly large bird with solid brown plumage on back, head and neck and a straight line at chest separating the whitish belly. Bird had a long stout bill, very short yellow legs and webbed feet, and long pointed wings and tail in flight. Based on the photographs that I examined, this bird appears to be a "sub-adult"...
