Observation details
Small Murrelet with fairly long, pointed bill, very contrasting black above, white below, with a dark eye set in a white face, though with white in front of eye and extending partially above. We initially thought this to be an odd Marbled Murrelet but learned of the correct ID following a reviewer comment by Charlie Wright. Bird was resting adjacent the first slip in the Westport Marina. It was not evident when we walked out to the end of the pier but clearly visible upon our return. We walked out onto the slip for better views; the whole time we were there the bird simply swam back and forth between the slip and the sloping bank below the parking area. It did not seemed to be disturbed by our presence or that of families fishing from the slip further away. It remained in the same general vicinity when we left 10 minutes or so later.
