small buff-colored thraot patch, heavy neck with uniform thickness
Observation details
Totally unexpected away from the coast. Juvenile plumage. Tan throat patch, bill long, straight, uniformly stout/sturdy throughout its length. This was a big cormorant with a short tail - size and proportions similar to DCCO. Thick straight neck without kink as in DCCO. Plumage color near uniform above and below - medium brown - a tad paler on underparts. Upperparts on swimming bird appeared darker when wet, a blackish brown compared to medium brown when dry. Wing coverts brown, each feather with a neat thin pale margin. Lores appear to be feathered, same color as surrounding feathers on face and forehead. Dark gular skin. Small buff throat patch with soft rounded edges to rear and below - contra the throat patch of NECO that is sharply/narrowly angled to the rear. Photos and video.
