Observation details
We saw this bird swimming on a pond near the Snake River, north of the Teller Rd, at 1105pm. We could not ID it on the spot, so we photographed it and kept driving. It was only when we downloaded the photos that we realized that this appears to be a female Garganey. We have shown these photos to several very knowledgeable birders we know, and all have supported the female Garganey ID. Note to eBird reviewer: We apologize for not posting this earlier! Diagnosis is based on the distinctive head striping pattern (dark eyeline, pale eyebrow, white lores and the dark line over the auriculars), lack of color patches on the wing, lack of color on the bill, and overall size (larger than a Teal). Additional photographs are available. Photographs by Racine M. Barton.
