Observation details
General impressions are of a big-headed, short-tailed hummer. White above eye, pale grayish auriculars, and fuscia-colored central gorget spot. Primaries extend just short of the tail, unlike Ruby-throated where the tail is noticeably longer. Width of the primaries consistent at rest. Attached photo shows the spread tail. Note the shape, pattern and color. R4 & 5 are grayish-green and fade to black, terminating in white tips. R3 has very little white and according to Peterson's Hummingbird guide, this could indicate an immature male. R1 is noticeably narrower but still pretty broad and rounded.
