Hard and heavy at first, dwindles to drips. 00917 Change to split track (Rex¿s pickup on left track, MKH20 on right track) for Flawn test walk with Rex around yard. 01100 RC: This place is full of ants¿can you hear them? 01200 RC: There¿s actually a ton of stuff on the grass here we might want to try¿ 01307 RC: We aren¿t getting very good signal. FW: The cartridge itself isn¿t making contact with the stem. 01500RC: I don¿t know what you could hear through there, but I can hear a couple of distant insect signals, one very low, whoo, whoo, do you hear that? And then¿but still quite distant. And they could be anywhere on this plant. 01550 RC: Do you hear that brrr brrr? Still quite distant. 01640 RC: I¿m going to move that cartridge again. So there¿s signals of two or three species in there, I don¿t know how well you can hear, the individuals themselves seem to be still quite distant, there¿s no telling where they might be, halfway up the tree. 01840 RC: Well we found a few signals in that plant but we didn¿t get close to any of them. (tech talk with FW.) 01945 RC: I think what we¿re hearing is probably these tiny gray leafhoppers¿the signals aren¿t traveling I guess very far through the plant. 02001 RC: I hear one faint signal ¿brrer¿in the background. But none of these in the foreground have called. And now we¿re getting some wind noise. Right now it¿s all wind induced. 02300 RC: So we¿re hearing a number of signals in the background, plus wind noise¿nothing in the foreground. I¿m gonna turn this off and reposition. So, test and see if that¿s¿that¿s the thing about recording under these conditions, that really don¿t know who you¿re hearing. Although you can get some idea if you hear something that¿s clearly in the foreground. So I¿m going to move things a little closer to this little group of insects up here. But trying to do it without alarming them unduly. 02440 (Tour continues, logging incomplete past 02440) 02615 audible insect calls on L ch, ambi on R 03100 Rex talks cont. 03330 ¿ 03617 ¿ 03843 distant insect calls L ch, ambi R 04137 ¿ 04240 Rex describes what we¿re hearing¿faint signals mostly.
