Show: Ballard PT-109 Log of DAT #: 4 Engineer: Neal Conan Date: May 20, 2002 BB = Bob Ballard Dw = Dwight Coleman NC = Neal Conan :08 NC Since we're up at 5:30 in the morning, let's try the early morning ambience again! :42 Ambi. A sweet sounding bird whistles in the distance. :56 Ambi. slight trickle of water, whistling bird continues 1:39 Ambi. A soft, hollow rumbling. Almost sounds like a small boat being shifted by the waves. 1:47 FX - Rumbling.. mic being moved? 2:06 Ambi. louder clearer sound of bird whistling. 2:26 End of Track 1 2:27 Beg. Of Track 2 2:28 NC all right, we're not far from where it happened, and we're just going to get some ambience. 2:28 - Ambi. The sound of waves slapping the side of the boat, listened to from the inside. Creaking wood. 4:45 - Ambi. Around the 5:00 mark the waves get calmer and the slapping noises become quieter. The wood creaks less. 5:40 Ambi. The water makes gurgling/bubbling noises. 6:51 NC Okay 6:52 repeated clunking noises¿ a loud thud, and then the start of an engine. 7:05 clunking noises again 7:15 The boat revs up, and then calms down to a slower rpm. 7:24 ?? it looks pretty close, we'll be there in about 5 minutes. 7:27 the low rumbling becomes a bit higher, the sound of a bow wake is about even with the sound of the engine. 7:51 the engine speeds up considerably, making a higher tone. 8:09 speeds up even more, the sound of the bow wake still audible, but by now dominated. 8:45 A new sound (another boat passing by?). The tones intermingle, become the same. 9:42 Slowly and gradually, the sound of the boat changes with the landscape - an echo from the boat is heard - perhaps from presence/absence of nearby cliffs/land? 10:11 The wind surrounding the microphone becomes especially audible here. The boat is just a droning noise now. 13:10 Bow waves are audible again. Three levels of sound: bow wake, drone of motor, wind from mic. 13:42 Begins to slow down 13:55 slows down considerably, you can hear the water jump from the bow. 14:21 they've got an air-conditioner in the wall, look at that¿ 14:26 what I'll do I'll just hop up over the side there¿. 14:39 End Track 3 14:40 Beg. Track 4 14:41 Ambi.. droning sound not unlike the boat from 10:11 14:53 (difficult to hear) made my first over this morning. I never realized how far¿ with the villagers.. it was hard to explain, there I was. I really am half-way around the world. They've taken me to a very different place. 15:29 How about this part?¿ 15:38 - :46 mumbling 15:50 NC this is going to be the recovery of the sonar Echo 15:50 - ambi. Droning sound continues. 16:11 door shuts. Droning continues. 16:20 FX - Velcro strap is un-done. 16:38 I'm too tall¿. (inaudible) 16:56 - 17:2? Ambi - barely audible mumbling 17:35 FX - a dull thud 17:53 Ambi - a higher pitched grinding sound joins the droning machinery sound. 18:32 grinding sound stops 19:43 - 19:48 people talking, words indistinguishable 19:53 FX - another dull thud 20:46 FX - slightly quieter dull thud 20:57 FX - identical thud 21:14 A sound that sounds like a train, or steam chugging from a pipe that has...
