Observation details
Lifer! This is what I came looking for... First heard at 4:49am in the distance, but just down the road. I decided to seek it out and was able to get quite close to where it was singing. I stopped and listened for a while, but it soon stopped as well. At 5:02 am, I played it's song and it responded! This time it was very close, but I was unable to see it with either my flashlight or my night vision. I recorded its call. At 5:13am it took flight and I got a good look at it. Wow, they are huge! The thing's a hawk! It passed over a berm and began singing again across an open field, off in the distance. I followed, making my way down a conveniently located trail. It was 5:23 in the morning, and just then, another began calling, seemingly in response to the other, toward a resort. At 5:29 am they stopped. I waited a minute, then played a recorded song... no response. Then at 5:31, one started singing behind me, back at the original tree line. This continued into nautical twilight, as Towhees and cardinals began waking up. As I made my way back to the main trail, I came across a Coati- something I had never seen before. My attempts to photograph it were apparently unsuccessful as my flashlight ran out of battery, but it was distinctly narrower than a raccoon with a pointed head and finely striped tail. Overall, it was an awesome experience I will not soon forget!
