Observation details
Heard around 5:58 am standing at the western end of impoundment "A1" (at approx. 36.12376, -78.82936). Calls seemed to come from across the impoundment to the NW and were rather hard to hear over all the frog and American Bittern calls. It sounded odd to me in the field but somehow, NSWO didn't occur to me, and I only checked the recordings earlier this week (observation entered on April 26). Then wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking other possibilities of nocturnally calling animals but got positive responses from both Andrew Thornton and Lance Benner. All calls are "wail" calls, at least 5 can be heard on the full recording (ML154005091), with the last and loudest two calls cut out in ML154005081, which also has a more severe high-pass filter and higher volume.
