Media notes
Pale morph Short-eared Owl seen repeatedly attacking a Hawaiian hawk
Observation details
One fairly regular looking bird, landed on a rock just upslope from the restroom. Another very dark phase bird was seen perched above the conifers at the lower part of the road, and one pale bird was seen flying as we drove up Pu‘u La‘au Road about two thirds of the way up to the Palila exclosure. One very pale bird seen repeatedly attacking a Hawaiian Hawk above the Palila Discovery exclosure. The barks of the owl were really interesting to hear, I don't think I have heard that call except when they were defending nests or territory.
