Observation details
The Elegants were medium sized, smaller than a Royal Tern would be, and also smaller than nearby Caspian Terns. They featured long slender orange-ish bills (less robust than a Royal), with very shaggy crests at rear of black cap. While birding the pond I heard their signature grating "kirr-ick" calls which got me excited as to their presence. Later I found them roosting at the pond outlet beach with a good sized flock of Caspian Terns. A decent comparison photo of the two species is attached.
