Observation details
We have Clay-colored Sparrows in the field next to our home in Wisconsin so it was kind of nice to see and hear one here in AZ:) I first heard the "buzz, buzz, buzz" call of this sparrow somewhere near the fence next to the bathrooms by the western-most soccer field. It appeared to be in a loose flock of Lark Sparrows and White-crowned Sparrows. It looked similar to a Brewer's Sparrow but had a darker cheek. It made its buzzy call twice (3 buzzes each) and flew up into a tree directly above me. It I took 2 pics but, as you can see, in one the face is covered and in the second all you see is the bird from underneath. The second pic does show distinct dark moustachial and pale submustachial stripes. The bird did its buzzy call twice in the tree above me and then flew north across the soccer field. I walked across to where it flew and heard it call again. I stood and looked in the shrubs trying to find it but I couldn't see it. A few minutes later I heard it call one more time but off in the distance to the northwest, probably near where it had been reported the day before. I didn't go after it.
